Stanley Steamer in his Suit Shovels Snow in the South!!

Unlike the guys in my last posting warming up inside, Stan takes it outside in Georgia.

Snow in the Mountains of Georgia

You've either lived it this past week or seen news reports of the deep south snow! And it's still freezing in a part of the country where it can get a bit chilly this time of year. But snow and very low temperartures? Really??!!

Well, yes. Steamer was like a little boy on Christmas morning. He couldn't wait to get outside for something he rarely sees in the peach state. So, jumping out of bed, he pulled on his boots, grabbed a snow shovel, and ran outside wearing only his union suit.

His neighbor, presumably dressed and seeing him out there in long red underwear, rushed over and, lucky for us, snapped some photos of the unusual site of his unusual neighbor out in the unusual weather:

Clearing snow off his and neighbors' driveways.

Good neighbor Stan in red underwear!

Who's that taking pictures of me?!

Taking a breather, whew!  This much shoveling
in hard but satisfying work!!

And, back to work!

When the wind picked up and Stan became cold in just his union suit and boots,
his considerate better-half brought him out a warm woolen cap and jacket!

Thanks, dear, for the jacket and cap!

Stan takes a well deserved break after braving the Georgia Mountain elements!

Stanley Steamer isn't the first man to face the brutal face of winter, shoveling snow in his union suit. However, I'm willing to wager he is the farthest fan south of the Mason-Dixon Line! Thanks, my man! ....Chris

What's a Guy to do on these Blasted Cold Blast Days Blowing in across the country from the Arctic??!!

Well, your Union Suit is a Great Start!

I guess you could just stay in bed all day in that union suit you got for Christmas with the covers pulled up over your head:

Or, why not hop out of bed, stretch and stay comfortably inside, safe and warm.

Buckeye Mike of Ohio in red Carhartts decided on
doing a home project he'd put off for months!

Exercise could warm you up! Right Coach?

How about making yourself some delicious hot stew
that'll warm you up, inside-out.
Of course, Retro's heavy winter union suit sure helps!

Or watch your favorite sports team give it their best on TV:

(On these really cold days, you may need to pull on a sweat suit
over your long red-flannel underwear!)

Keeping your rear escape hatched buttoned securely,
try tickeling the ivories on that ole piano to heat up:

Relaxing on the couch couldn't hurt....

Maybe, look for your the car keys you misplaced!

If you're like Stanley Steamer, you might catch up on repair work around the house?

A rousing game of ping pong in your union suit warms a guy up pretty fast!

Nah, hibernating in bed is the best idea!!

Keep 'em buttoned, I do! ....Chris

19th Century Printmaking

Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) of Roxbury Mass teamed up with James Ives (1824-1895) of New York City to create inexpensive hand-painted lithographs of Americana cultural (usually rural) scenes.  Originally, their company was known as "The Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints." That mouthful was changed in 1857 to just "Currier and Ives."  Perhaps you've heard of them. That famous lithograph company made their popular art for ordinary folks from 1835 to 1907.  It is reliably estimated that these dedicated artists and businessmen created 7,500 original lithographs in the 72 years that the company was in business. In addition, their company produced one million plus hand-colored prints too. That amounted to about two to three new creations per week!

Retro Jeff of Illinois sent me the following Currier and Ives Lithographs of rural scenes depicting hard-working men who typically wore long red flannel underwear under their clothes that could be seen with shirt sleeves rolled up!  Some examples:

"Preparing For Market," 1856

"Haying Time, The First Load" 1868

More Dudes (Union) Suited Up for the Cold Weather!

LoneStar Mike looking for that ice storm hitting other parts of the USA:

And Retro Jeff tells us he's beating the cold with his email and photo....."Today in the Mid West icebox beating the cold. Underneath my ancient, faded Carhartt, I'm wearing a vintage West brand waffle weave union suit and keeping toasty warm. We're socked in with the cold but the snow is supposed to all go south of Northern Illinois!"

Here's East Coast Coach who never fails to double up by wearing two union suits to beat the cold this time of year!

Some winter locations have little or no snow but still
great to warm up in a comfortable union suit - Thanks, Clem

Buckeye's winterwear underwear ensemble
includes a scarf to keep his neck warm!

So Union Suit Fan, what are you wearing, long underwear wise,
to keep ahead of the cold weather most of us are experiencing this week?!
