Jerry Says: "Chris
Ayers is really into union suits, so I shouldn't be surprised that he
found my story on the subject in From a Wooden Canoe. Here it is, on
his very interesting site, where you can learn everything you ever
wanted to know about longjohns: unionsuitfan.blogspot.com "

Hey Fans: Here's
a newspaper article I ran across after corresponding with Jerry Dennis.
This recognition is one of many accolades that Jerry has received
over many years of being one of America's top contemporary writers
of the great outdoors.... Chris
- GREENSBORO, N.C. (Jan. 5, 2010) - Wrangler® announced today that Jerry Dennis of Traverse City, Michigan, won the 2009 Wrangler® ProGear™ "Garments are Gear" Column Contest for members of the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA) with his humorous tribute to long underwear.
Entitled "All Hail the Union Suit," Dennis' winning column praises the historical one-piece garment, also known as long johns, as "warm, comfortable, and comforting as the one-piece bunny pajamas you wore when you were three."
Dennis, the grand prize winner, will receive a special plaque and seven outdoor outfits courtesy of Wrangler ProGear. Four other authors - Patricia Strutz of Eagle River, Wisc., Tom Watson of Appleton, Minn., Milt Rosko of Watchung, N.J., and Gene Hester of Springfield, Va. - earned second through fifth places, respectively, also winning Wrangler ProGear clothing.
Judge Chris Batin, editor and publisher of Alaska Angler and Alaska Hunter, praised the winning column as "captivating" and "definitely first-place material for any magazine editor."
Natalie emails: My husband Ray is a dedicated union suit wearer like you. Both us and our 20 year old son get a real bang out of your blog. We look forward to each and every one of your stories and pictures. So far, my husband won't let me send you a picture of him in his long johns but I will keep working on him! Our son was in a school play two or three years ago called Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. He borrowed one of Ray's red union suits to wear on stage with the other boys.
ReplyDeleteThanks Natalie. I'm happy to hear that you and yours enjoy this blog. Tell Ray to get that union suit photo in to me pronto. And, tell your son that I was in a high school play myself. He may have seen one of my earlier postings that featured a photo that my mom took of me in my long johns when I was in "A Country Christmas Carol" a few years ago.
