 Boys will be Boys

Yes, when it comes to underwear, boys will be boys even when they're wearing their union suits. Two of my boys wear union suits while my youngest son prefers two piece "super hero" thermal underwear.

After my last "Pilgrim" posting, Clem of "da Bronx" sent along some photos of boys' vintage union suits...

"Chris:  It struck me that this is where guy’s love of union suits may begin: as boys!!"

Happy Thanksgiving, Pilgrims!

This pair of boy’s long johns, sporting a neutral oatmeal color, is a great fit for a Shaker Peg Rack especially for the fall and winter months. This ribbed union suit is a cotton / wool blend has “mother of Pearl” buttons as well as attractive detailed stitching.

The brand name “Pilgrim” was used by Sears and Roebuck, Inc. to advertise and mark boys' clothing articles back in the day. It was first introduced in their 1905 Catalog for socks and underwear advertising. During the 1920's and 30’s, union suits became very popular especially in the winter months because central heating was uncommon. This union suit or “long john’s” made for boys was added to the Pilgrim line during this time-frame and the one-piece underwear had buttons all the way up the front and a one button rear flap. Other items under this name were also incorporated and included long and BVD style underwear, shirts, hats, pajamas, ties and socks.

So How Do You Assessorize Your Union Suit?

With Overalls?

Maybe with Shorts and a Guitar?

With Trousers and Braces?

Pants and Shoes for a
Stroll Down the Highway?

With Exercise Equipment?

How about with a Cowboy Hat
and Spiffy Socks?

Perhaps With a Pillow
for a Good Night's Sleep?

With Pants and Boots
  for a Photo Shoot?

 Get Your Game On!

For most of the U.S. and Canada, it's time to unpack those union suits you put away for the summer and pull them on for the cold weather! Get moving!

A big thanks to Clem of "da Bronx"

for sending the above photo of these boys playing lacrosse and

the following vintage ads featuring men in union suits who have

their game on!

Me and My Union Suit, Back After A Stint in the Woods

Following a short break over the past 10 days up at my buddy's Canadian mountain cabin with a couple of other pals, I'm back to working on postings for the upcoming Union Suit Season. It's getting colder and colder in northern Idaho where I call home.

In this photo, I'm wearing a new Indera Union Suit I researched and ordered just before my trip. I like it. As you may know, I've not been a fan of Indera all that much in the past, as I didn't think it was of the best quality. And I hated the fact that it only had six buttons, so it gapped in the wrong places, if you know what I mean. But now the quality is better and this union suit has eight buttons which is just enough. I prefer nine or ten buttons up the front but this will do fine. Their quality is now better, especially along the seams, and the wrist and ankle cuffs are very well made and comfortable. These cuffs should keep the cold air away from my arms and legs.

Be warned before buying Indera Union Suits that the material is light weight and I mean, light weight. But it was great for my wearing to bed as pj's this past week and I'll look forward to wearing this long underwear in the Rocky Mountains, around the lake, and into the woods in late spring, early fall, and next summer. In the meantime, I will be wearing heavier weight union suits for the next few months due to colder weather on the horizon.

So, join me for another season of Union Suit Fan and my companion blog, Union Suit Fans in the Limelight!  Most important, don't forget to continue emailing me photos and articles of your favorite underwear for future postings... Chris
